reflection post
1. I learned that the sling was the first weapon of the anchient times
2. my research question was how was the sling sussecful and how did it modernize into the onager and trebuchet.
3.the sling taught physics and math to the people that used it
4.yes
5.it showed videos of the sling and other siege weapons.
6.i did well on explaining the project..
7.itd be nice if i had an ongoing video of a slinging.
8.the video
9. different weapons of the anchient time in the video
10.i think i deserve a b....or a c... because although i did stuff when it was due.... i procrastenated on making the video...because i didnt have time to work on it and i tottaly forgot about it.. i still got it completed but i couldve done better with it

my next plan
my next thing im working on is getting videos for the project such as the trebuchet videos and the slinging bideos and possibly some onager vids

daily progress post #10
i ahve finished the informations and index cards needs to complete my project next i shall work on the video
Index card #30
te ballista was used by julius cesar in his attack against gual and it was highly prized and killed many people during the war against britain and were recorded in his book/journal
Index Card #29
the slider were passed through the field frames of the weapon whitch were located in the springs(rope made out of animal sinew) which were attached to the bow arms and in turn were the bow strings the ballista was a accurate weapon whic of many accounts had enemies being picked off by yards away.
Index Card #28
the early roman ballista were made of wood and held together with iron plates around the frame the iron would have been brought via a cart and wood around the local area was used to make this weapon stone shot or bolts were fired at enemies.
Index Card #27
these ancheint weapons were first brought up to be siege weapons but later ideas came up with the idea of a much smaller shooting version capable of shooting bigger arrows to kill more targets this was when the scorpion was introduced, much smaller more portable version of the ballista
Index Card #26
the invention of torshion spring bundle technoligy brought many ideas to the greeks soon to this brough the ballista. the advantage of this technoligy was that it had a fast relaxation time thus would allow bigger projectiles to be fired from the weapon.
Index Card #25
the early basllista in the times of achient greece was devolped from two weapons known as oxybeles, and gastraphetes whitch was the belly bow whitch was a torshion powered crossbow. it had a composite prod and was spanned with both hands with a ratchet to prvent it from firing while loading.

daily progress post #9
i have described many of the acheint weapons used it greek and forward next i will explain how this ties into the use of the sling and why this all has something to do with it
Index Card #24
this weapon was quite the equal to a giant crossbow it could shoot giant bowing ball sized ammunition or sometimes it could shoot large arrows that were shot from long distances and sometimes caught on fire to be used in sieges .
Index Card #23 the ballista
the roman engineers wanted a bigger machine with a greater range so in 399 bc, they invented the ballista. the ballista was unlike the greek onager or trebuchet, built almost entirely out of wood. the ballista used and older frame type that was much more powerful as arms could travel furter, but it was more expensive and so it was used primarily for a big stone throwing machine. the ballista also had a ratch device on the outside, made out of steel, it was larger than the onage or trebuchet. in fact some of the machines were the biggest ever made in roman
Index Card #22
since the onager weapon was so simple it took place in every siege the romans had including the balista, it ran off of a torshion setup which required bundled rope and was setup up in side a turning system that when turned it would create torhsin and was pulled back with a lever and then released firing an object fast and hard, this was alot like a ballista.
Index Card #21
the story of the wild donkey is completely irrelevant to the subject of the onager but whenever the donkey was hunted it was kick stones and send them flying toward the enemy injuring or even killing them.
Index Card #20 the onager
the orrignal make of the onager dates back to somewhere around 50 bc when it was first invented by the romans. it was used as and anti personal weapon, but mainly as a siege weapon. the average onager would stand 6 feet high and fired really big rocks, hundreds of feet. it was named after the wild donkey which because of the onagers massive kicking power related to and donkey kick.
status report
1.i have made a few index cards and natural slings to acomidate the natural "look of the sling"
2.i still have alot more to do including, a video, and more information on the weapon, and possibly a model.
3.the model i think has been harder since i have no time in my busy schedule to fit in a make of the trubchet or onager.
4. getting videos from youtube i think will be easier than me making a video of myself throwing rocks with my sling.
5.if i could do my progect differently if i could start again i would have probbly been nice if i had gotten a video camera alot could have then would be acomplished with one.
6.i need to get a few more index cards complete before spring break and get that video set up.

Index Card #19
in additional to unequal wights the trebuchet uses mechanical leverage, the trebuchet and sling alone both use centrifugal force when a rock is placed in the puch of the sling or a rock is put into the sling of a trebuchet the motion and that you make with your arm or the trebuchet makes with its arm, holds the projectile in place until final release, than the power of the motion causes linear motion and kinetic energy and sends the projectile flying.

Daily progress post #8
i have worked on discussing about trebuchets next time i will work more on discussing about trbuchets
Index Card #18
at the most basicness of a trebuchet, a trebuchet is simply a lever that uses centifugal force to its advantage. consider a seesaw if one person is sitting on one end and 2 fat people jump on the other end the person is most likely to go flying. this is like a trebuchet except the arm is pivoted in the middle and the counterweight and projectiles are the partipants ussaly the counterweight weighs much more than the projectile ussaly 10x more than one.
index card #17
The trebuchet was the dominant and most used sege weapon in europe from 850AD to 1350AD lasting 100 years after the introduction to gunpowder. in most of europe it was called an ingenium, and the technicians worked on the weapon were ingeniators (engineers). large version threw large stones diseased cows shunned negotiators, and also rotting flesh.
Index Card #17
besides these king richard had also two magonels [traction trebuchets] one of these resembled and plastic spoon that a kid would use to fling food off and used torshion energy, twisted rope to power it and give it fascinating strength. one of these were so swift and violent that its shots reached the inner streets of the city meat market. it can be clearly said that king richards trebuchet shot constantly day and night and could kill 12 men with a single stone, that stone was sent for saladin to see.
Index Card #16
the count of flanders had a choice trbuchet, which kind richard had after his death, as well as another trbuchet which was not so good these machines contantly bombarded the tower next to a gate which the turks frequently used, until the tower was half demolished, besides these, king richard had two new ones made with remarkable work and materials and could hit the intended target no matter how far off it was.
Index Card # 15
besides most of these, there was one trebuchet that had been constructed at general exspense, which they called "gods stone thrower" A preist, always stood next to it preaching and collecting money for its continual repair and for hiring people to gather the stones for its ammunition. this machine at laste demolished the wall next to the cursed tower for around two perches about the length of 11 yards or two meters.
Index Card #14
the trebuchet in the later years had brought much promise to europe and most the rest of the european continent, in the year 1191 richard the the lionheart (The duke of normandy) began a siege to the city acre during the midevil crusades, the duke concetrated much of his work constructing siege machines and placing them in places he found suitable he wanted them to shoot daily, day and night he had an exellent one that the duke called "Bad Neighbor" its continual bonbardment destroyed most the cit wall and shattered a tower, on one side of the templars trebuchet it wreaked impressive devestation.

Daily progress post # 7
i have made progress by explaining different slings and started talking about weapons using the slings
Index card #13-the later years...
later during the fall of the roman empire the sling was forgotten and new technoligy was brought to be better than the bow or sling the invention of the trebuchet was brought into was whitch uses a SLING on the tip of the arm to throw bigger projectiles at castles and enemy territory.
Index Card #12
another great sling is the netted sling it consists of a net for the pouch that is similar to the braiding techniques of a the braided sling but has a complex build.
Index Card #11
the sierra nevada sling is another useful sling it was ment for short ranges and had alot more accuracy. it was a style of braiding that used the end of the cord to make a frizz on the end to help for comfort. the sheaperd in sierra nevada used this to ward of prey going for his sheep
Index card #10
another fascinating sling the woven sling, with many styles and desighns that make these into quite fine mater pieces and also alow much more release power.

daily progress post #6
i have made much progress by explaining different types of slings next i will discuss more about different types of slings
Index Card #8
then there is also the venerable hand sling whitch is bassicly a bigger version of the much more traditional sling it is more of what david used to sling and hurl giant rocks at goliath
Index Card #7
then there is of course the simple string sling whitch is a simple length of cord whitch is then knotted in such a way it makes a 3 cord pouch rest, this is the simplest of all slings
Index Card #6
like many slings, the braided sling takes much effort to make you need to make use of flat braiding techniques and split continue braiding the braided sling had alot of dexterity and strength and lasted for many years other than the cord and pouch sling whitch could wear at the base of the punch and split the cord causing many sling problems.
Index Card #5
and yes of course....there are yet many possible variations of the sling, theres some such as braided slings, venerable sling, hemp slings and many other sort of variations now today most people like to use more easier ways of going about such as using synthetic materials for there sling such things can be produced in larger quanities and colors but we all know that quanitie is not neccesarily quality some many more of slings such as natural fiberd slings and well used to, the egyptians made use of a finely woven slings that consiisted of merely no more than a couple lengths of cord.

progress post #5
i made progress by explaining about the story of david and goliath next i shall work on different styles of the sling
idex card #4
everyone has read their bibles hopefully therefor knowing bout the story of david and goliath david was know for battling the head of the phillipine army "goliath" and went without barely any armo and said all he needed was a sling, he was able to hit goliath in the head wherever he wanted
progress post #4
this is to make up for thursdays post, i worked on the sling vs the bow and for future work i will no talk about the study of davids sling in david and goliath
Progress Post #3
i have discussed the charecteristics of the sling and the history next i will discuss about how it was compettive against the bow
Thursday, February 19, 2009
indexcard #3
The main competitor of the sling, the Bow had many favorable charecteristics it had shorter distance took longer to reload and was harder to make, whitch made the sling much more easier to make and use, the weapon was extrordinary in the hands of a skilled trained user it was much more deadly than a bow, the weapon deiminished after the fall of the roman empire and was rarely seen again but the romans that used the weapon could aim know where they were going to hit there target and could hit a person in the head where they wanted.
IndexCard #2
there are several reasons of why the sling has extrordinary charectistics it is merely an exstenshion of the users body allowing the user to use the weapon like if it was his own arm.
their charecteristics live with user in spirit and soul so it was unlike the guns of today of whitch did not take much skill to use and doesent have much spirit and strength with the user like a sling.

daily progress post #2
i have made some progress by discussing the origin of the sling and decribing what the device is and how its used, next i will describe how it battles against the bow, and different ranges
IndexCard 1-What is a sling?
The sling is known to be mans first real projectile weapon able to hurl projectiles up to 1500 feet and can acomplish speeds exceeding 250 mph, the weapon consisted of 3 properties the ring finger cord, the realease cord and the pouch, the pouch was ussaly made out of leather but later people have found ways of weaving the weapon by hand or braiding it, making it alot easier to handle and making it able to last alot longer than the ones attached to leather, the weapon was held in the users dominant hand and then the user would put a rock into the pouch, put the loop around the persons finger they were comfortable with and the realease knot in the index finger
and was swung above the users head head and then when released right hurled several feet away.

7 things we will discuss in this blog
1. how the primitive sling modernized to alot of other weapons such as the trebuchet, onager, scorpion and ballista.
2.i am hopefully going to end up having a video of me slinging rocks and show how it prgressed to what it is.
3.its going to prove that the sling moderanized to alot of other weapons such as the sling is used on a trebucet and onager.
4.the final product will be a basic overview of the sling, a couple videos will show how the sling is used.
5.the videos will answer some many of the queestions we will be talking here such as how theyre made and how to use them
6.first i need to to give discuss what a sling is and how its made, then i want to decribe what materials they used and the technique and mastery it takes to sling. then after wards decribe the amunition the acheints used to sling.
7.then ill will decribe the genreations of what the sling had gone to.
